I’ve always been fascinated with maps. Southern California Road Maps are new abstract paintings loosely based on neighborhoods in Palm Springs, Los Angeles, and Laguna Beach where I walk frequently. In these paintings, I use a color palette reflecting dominant natural elements of each neighborhood. Arrows, both directional and symbolic, are key parts of the compositions.

In this series

I use un-stretched linen, straddling the line between painting and textile art. I work with layers of paint, ink, enamel, thread, and sand in each painting, creating allusions to architecture, gardens, street structure and signage.  The shapes overlay each other with transparency and the blurred edges suggest shifting boundaries and borders.

The paintings with their nod to flags, quilts and tapestries are contemporary treasure maps with hidden messages and references to the uneasy and messy way the man-made built environment intersects with the natural landscape.

Road Map #16 Araby Cove

This painting is on unstretched and ungessoed linen and shows the layers of paint. I’ve used lots of enamel and thread to highlight sections and when you walk by the painting it responds with a bit of billowing. While not an exact map of one of my favorite neighborhoods in Palm Springs I’ve tried to capture the colors and curves of the roads.

The flowers of

Laguna Beach are one of the inspirations for this painting. Everywhere you look you see bougainvillea and jacarandas.

Desert Palisades

is a semi-secret area in Palm Springs that has gigantic boulders, wild brush, rocky trails and views for miles

Larchmont Village

is my neighborhood in Los Angeles and has a small town feeling in a large metro area. I see vibrant front yard gardens, lovely cottages and contemporary homes on my daily walks
